Instead of an inner ring, cam followers have a solid stud (pin) that is threaded so that the cam follower can be quickly and easily attached to appropriate machine components by means of a hexagonal nut.

A cam follower, also known as a track follower, is a specialized type of roller or needle bearing designed to follow cam lobe profiles. Cam followers come in a vast array of different configurations, however the most defining characteristic is how the cam follower mounts to its mating part; stud style cam followers use a stud while the yoke style has a hole through the middle.

The most common type uses needle rollers. This design can withstand high radial loads but no thrust loads. A similar design is the caged needle roller design, which also uses needle rollers, but uses a cage to keep them separated. This design allows for higher speeds but decreases the load capacity. Using a cage design was originated by RBC Bearings in 1971.

For heavy-duty applications a roller design can be used. This employs two rows of rollers of larger diameter than used in needle roller cam followers to increase the dynamic load capacity and provide some thrust capabilities. This design can support higher speeds than the full needle roller design.

Constructed with the inner ring and ball assembly contained within an outer ring which has a spherical raceway for self aligning this type of bearing is particularly suitable for applications where misalignment occurs from errors in mounting or from shaft deflection.

This type is often used in conjunction with Plummer Block Housings in blowers, fans and belt conveyors.

Pillow blocks are housings which have a bearing fitted into them. Pillow blocks are usually mounted in cleaner environments and generally are meant for lesser loads of general industry. These differ from “plummer blocks” which are bearing housings supplied without any bearings and are usually meant for higher load ratings and corrosive industrial environments. The terms pillow block and plummer block are used interchangeably in certain parts of the world.

The fundamental application of both types is the same which is to mount bearings safely enabling their outer ring to be stationary while allowing rotation of the inner ring. The housing is bolted to a foundation through the holes in the base. Bearing housings are either split type or unsplit type. Split type housings are usually two piece housings where the cap and base can be detached, while certain series are one single piece housings.

Various seals are provided to prevent dust and other contaminants from entering the housing. Thus the housing provides a clean environment for the expensive bearings to freely rotate, hence increasing their performance and duty cycle.

Bearing housings are usually made of grey cast iron. However various grades of metals can be used to manufacture the same.

Radial ball bearings consist of an inner and outer ring with a cage containing a complement of precision balls. The standard Conrad-type bearing has a deep-groove construction capable of handling radial and axial loads from either direction in versatile designs that permit relatively high-speed operation.

Single-row, Deep Groove Radial Ball Bearings

These are the most common bearing type with a wide range of applications. Radial bearings are made with very high levels of precision and used in applications where rotational performance and low torque is necessary, but load is a secondary issue. Deep-groove bearings however do have higher load ratings for their size than shallow-groove ball bearings, but are also less tolerant of misalignment.

Ceramic Hybrid Ball Bearings

Ceramic hybrid ball bearings use ceramic balls in place of steel balls and are constructed with steel inner and outer rings. Using ceramic balls that can weigh up to 40% less than steel balls these bearings reduce centrifugal loading and skidding. This allows hybrid ceramic bearings to operate up to 50% faster than conventional metal bearings. The lighter balls in this type of assembly allow the bearing to spin faster, using less energy to maintain speed.

This means that they are designed to accommodate combined loads, simultaneously acting on radial and axial loads.

The axial load carrying capacity of angular contact ball bearings increases with increasing contact angle. The contact angle is defined as the angle between the line joining the points of contact of the ball and the raceways in the radial plane, along which the load is transmitted from one raceway to another, and a line perpendicular to the bearing axis.

A needle roller bearing is a bearing which uses small cylindrical rollers. The difference between a needle roller bearing and roller bearing is the ratio of diameter and length of their rollers, when the ratio of the diameter and the length of roller of a roller bearing is between the interval of 0.1 to 0.4, that roller bearing is called a needle roller bearing.

Needle bearings have a larger surface area that is in contact with the bearing outer surfaces compared to a ball bearing. The typical structure consists of a needle cage which orients and contains the needle rollers, the needle rollers themselves, and an outer race (sometimes the housing itself).

Radial needle bearings are cylindrical and use rollers parallel to the axis of the shaft. Thrust needle bearings are flat and use a radial pattern of needles.

Full complement bearings have solid inner and outer rings and rib-guided cylindrical rollers. Since these bearings have the largest possible number of rolling elements, they have extremely high radial load carrying capacity and are suitable for particularly compact designs.

Needle roller bearing are available in single row, double row and solid or split cage units.
